The cause of crush injuries in the workplace is varied, but the risk is particularly high in the construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

A crush injury can happen when there’s a sudden impact to the body or when a part of your body is compressed between two objects. Most crush injury claims arise from an accident in the workplace and are particularly common in the construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.

Accidents involving moving unguarded machinery and vehicles, lifting, stacking or general manual handling of goods and materials can all cause crush injuries. As a result of such accidents, it is common for hands and fingers to be become trapped and trauma to be sustained to upper or lower limbs.

The pressure from a crush injury can damage bones, muscles and internal organs and can lead to life-changing consequences, such as a head or brain injury or amputation. When extreme pressure has been applied to the chest a crush injury can be fatal.

More minor injuries are extremely painful and disabling in the short term and can lead to long-term conditions such as Crush Syndrome, Compartment Syndrome, or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

Health & Safety laws aim to ensure reasonable steps are put in place by employers to protect their employees – including making sure you have the training and protective equipment needed to avoid a crush injury. However, these systems can break down when an employer fails to follow the rules and regulations or an accident is caused by the actions (or omissions) of a colleague.
