Protecting Your Information: Top Tips for Staying Safe Online

Cyber security is a top priority in today’s digital landscape, particularly in the legal sector where sensitive client information is paramount. At Minster Law, we recognise the importance of staying ahead of emerging threats to protect our clients’ data and maintain operational integrity. Our IT service team leader, Jordan Bracken, shares some essential tips for enhancing cyber security. 

Understanding the common threats  

  1. Phishing Attacks: Fraudulent emails or messages that appear to be from reputable sources, tricking individuals into providing sensitive information such as passwords, credit card numbers, or other personal details. 
  2. Malware: Malicious software designed to damage, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to computer systems. Examples include viruses, worms, ransomware, and spyware. 
  3. Ransomware: A type of malware that encrypts a victim’s files, making them inaccessible until a ransom is paid. Even after payment, there’s no guarantee that the files will be restored. 
  4. Social Engineering: Manipulative tactics used by attackers to trick individuals into divulging confidential information. This can include pretexting, baiting, or tailgating. 

The best way to avoid these is to always be cautious, should anything seem too good to be true, try contacting the sender via a second method of communication so you can verify whether the initial contact was due to the sender being compromised or not.  

Here are some key tips to ensure your data remains secure: 

  1. Create Strong Passwords: Use a combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessed information, such as birthdays or pet names. Avoid having your password written down, consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords securely. Try not to share logins and passwords across different services, instead, use a unique password for every different service. If the ‘shared’ details get compromised, you will need to change them for every service you use them for.   
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, enable 2FA for an additional layer of security. This typically involves a second step, such as receiving a code on your phone, to verify your identity. 
  3. Keep Software Updated: Regularly update your operating system, browsers, and other software. Updates often include important security patches that protect against vulnerabilities. 
  4. Be Wary of Phishing Attempts: Be cautious of emails, messages, or websites that ask for personal information. Verify the authenticity of the source before clicking on links or providing any data. If possible – do not click links, instead open a web browser and access the site / service that way. 
  5. Use Secure Networks: Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions. If you must use public networks, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your connection. 
  6. Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly review your bank statements, credit reports, and online accounts for any suspicious activity. Early detection can help prevent further damage. 
  7. Verify If you’re unsure you can verify that the communication is genuine by contacting the sender via a different method. i.e. text, call or a different email address you know is used.
