As a trainee solicitor at Minster Law engaged in a six-year apprenticeship programme studying at BPP Law School, I have embraced the hybrid working model from the onset of my role, balancing between working from home, the office, and studying. My current role in the apprenticeship programme is a paralegal, where I assist with high-value, complex cases. My transition into remote supervision was marked by initial challenges, particularly in maintaining clear and consistent communication with my team. However, structured meetings and daily interactions with my fee earner/associate have been instrumental in overcoming these hurdles, allowing for effective communication and supervision.
Remote supervision has its advantages and disadvantages depending on how it’s managed. For me, the flexibility remote working offers ensures a work-life balance, ensuring happiness and productivity by allowing work to fit around my personal life. However, it demands a high degree of self-discipline and effective time management. In my role, remote supervision involves regular check-ins and weekly structured meetings focusing on case planning and task management, ensuring I stay productive and receive necessary guidance.
Technology plays a crucial role in enabling remote work and supervision, with tools like Microsoft Teams enabling instant communication and collaboration, alongside Outlook for more extensive discussions. These tools support not only efficient supervision but also help maintain strong connections with my supervisor and colleagues through regular communication and departmental meetings.
Continual learning and development are vital components of my role, with remote supervision providing opportunities for new tasks, feedback, and professional growth. Regular updates and opportunities to assist other fee earners broaden my experience, while feedback from my supervisor via Teams calls and emails supports my learning curve.
The success of remote supervision in my role is evident in the significant improvement in my time management and productivity, leading to the completion of daily tasks to a high standard. Positive feedback from my supervisor on my performance and development underlines the effectiveness of remote supervision. For those new to remote supervision, I recommend establishing a structured daily routine, focusing on effective time management, and maintaining open lines of communication with colleagues and supervisors to foster good relationships and support professional growth.
