Tom Streamer, a member of our Serious Injury department has spent the last 12 months training for and tackling eight of the most challenging obstacle courses that the UK has to offer.
He didn’t do all this for fun though; Tom completed these challenges to raise funds to support the vital work carried out by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Running a total of 117 miles, Tom completed the likes of the “Man vs -” trilogy including a 23-mile run from St Michael’s Mount, up to the north Cornish coast and down to Land’s End with some obstacles and a swim along the way; and a 30 mile run in the Lake District starting across Morecambe Bay and ending up in Coniston.
It wasn’t just the events that were gruelling though, the training that Tom undertook in order to prepare for each event saw him dedicate his evenings and weekends over the last 12 months.
Working in our Serious Injury department, Tom often sees clients who have been reliant on the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as they brought them to safety after a serious road traffic accident.
The service provided is run entirely on charitable donations and requires approximately £12,000 per day to keep their helicopters operating.
“It’s been a long but very rewarding year,” Tom said.
“I completed my first marathon plus event which also included the eeriest place I’ve ever run – across a sea fog shrouded Morecambe Bay. I’ve completed events in England, Scotland and Wales: from swimming in the freezing waters of Glasgow’s Forth & Clyde Canal to running in the Cornish sunshine and the Welsh rain.”
He said it had been equally horrendous and amazing – but well worth it to raise money for the YAA.
Minster is dedicated to supporting colleagues with their social responsibility and will match fund the amount raised by Tom.
