Minster Law announces major new volunteering programme for Wakefield after meeting local MP

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh has thrown her support behind our plans to sponsor a range of activities to build skills in the local community.

We’re one of the UK’s top law firms and are one of Wakefield’s biggest employers. The 450-strong team help injured people get the help and compensation they need to get back on their feet after an accident.

In a visit to our offices, Mary heard from CEO Shirley Woolham and the community team that Minster Law plans to invest the equivalent of £100,000 via a raft of activities, including partnerships with Wakefield District Council, local schools and small businesses, where employees will volunteer their knowledge and skills to benefit the local community and economy.

The plans are also designed to offer job opportunities to people in Wakefield, and boost career development, especially focusing on recruiting young people from local colleges.

Mary said: “I am delighted Minster Law are making such a positive contribution to Wakefield, and I really like the idea of employees getting directly involved with schools and businesses through volunteering.”

“Often it gives the volunteers a personal stake in their chosen school or business and leads to long term relationships that benefit everyone.”

Shirley explained that we are keen to work with schools and colleges to develop future talent for the business, which is currently in the middle of a recruitment drive, with 40 new roles on offer at all levels in the company.

She said: “Recruiting from the local community is a key objective, and we aren’t just looking for lawyers, but entry-level jobs in customer service, administration, finance and trainee legal adviser teams, as well as positions for more experienced people.”

“We chose Wakefield as our HQ for a number of reasons, and now we have moved to one site we want to play a leading role in the future prosperity of the town. We will be working hard with Mary and other local leaders to make 2019 a year of achievement for Minster Law in the community.”
