A group of six trainee solicitors at Minster Law are learning that the Training Contracts programme isn’t just about getting to grips with legal practices. The personal injury specialists are extremely passionate about supporting the local communities too, and encourage all their employees across all areas of the business to do as much as they can to help charities and other causes through volunteering and fundraising.
Over the past 12 months, Clare Smeaton, Rosie Owen, Matthew Itson, Luke Hopkinson, Joanne Jewell-Purves and Breesha Loughran, who are currently undertaking their Training Contracts, have been working alongside fundraisers at York’s St Leonard’s Hospice to raise as much money as possible so that they can continue their vital work in the community. Although the hospice does receive some government funding, the majority of its running costs are raised through fundraising and they rely heavily on the generosity of the public to help raise the £4.85 million it costs to run each year.
At the start of the year, the trainees, along with other members of Minster Law’s Make a Difference team, raised more than £5,000 in the popular Accumulator Challenge and have hosted numerous bake sales, competitions and ‘dress down’ days throughout the year. Most recently, the group raised almost £1,400 by taking part in the 2017 Midnight Walk – a popular annual event that sees participants take part in a 6.5-mile circular route across the Knavesmire, along the River Ouse and then on to the sights and sounds of York City Centre under the cover of darkness.
Trainee Solicitor Clare Smeaton said: “As a team of current and future trainee solicitors, we are very aware that supporting local charities is much more than a ‘nice to do’ and is high on our priorities in addition to our ‘day jobs’. This year we wanted to continue to support St Leonard’s Hospice, starting with the Accumulator Challenge in February as well as completing the Midnight Walk.
“The support for St Leonards’ cause from our colleagues at Minster Law has been phenomenal, and we have set our sights on raising even more money for the charity, which is so close to many of our hearts.”
Katie Jackson, Events Fundraiser at St Leonard’s Hospice added: “On behalf of everyone at the hospice I want to say a big thank you and well done to the team for their amazing efforts! The money raised through this kind of activity really does make such a difference to so many people and Minster Law should be very proud of everyone involved.”
