Did you know that approximately 1.9 million tonnes of food is wasted by the food industry every year?
Food wastage in the UK is a hot topic, which is incredible when you consider that more than 8.4 million people in the UK struggle to afford a meal. Minster Law’s Human Resources and Marketing teams recently spent the day with UK charity, FareShare, to see how they’re helping to fight hunger and food waste.
FareShare works with big name brands and supermarkets such as Tesco, M&S and Kellogg’s to redistribute surplus food to around 170 frontline charities, who then turn it into nutritious meals. The whole operation is supported by an army of volunteers and benefits almost 15,000 vulnerable people each week – in 2016, FareShare provided enough food for nearly 1.4 million meals.
Our teams spent the day volunteering at FareShare Yorkshire’s distribution warehouse in Barnsley. Their tasks included sorting and categorising the donated food to help with distribution and helping with deliveries.
Minster Law’s Laura Hoole, who took part in the volunteering day said: “I’m so glad we were able to use our team volunteering day in this way – doing something positive to make a difference in our local community was a really worthwhile and humbling experience.”
Laurie Holland, who also visited FareShare Yorkshire added: “It was a real eye-opener to see just how much food would otherwise go to waste if FareShare didn’t exist. It was a real privilege to join the team for the day – hopefully the charity will be able to expand even further to help them save even more good food from being wasted.”
