Minster Law employee prepares to fly high for charity

A Minster Law employee is getting ready to take on the highest mountain in Wales in a bid to raise vital funds towards the construction of a new health clinic in Zambia. Amanda Parkinson, who is based at the company’s Wakefield office, is one of three Minster Law employees chosen to travel to Kapiri to visit the new centre in an initiative funded by the BGL Group, Minster Law’s parent company.

Amanda will travel to Snowdonia National Park at the end of February where her first gruelling challenge will be to tackle the Watkin Path – Mount Snowdon’s most physically demanding route to the top. The 26-year-old will then need to hold her nerve as she heads to Velocity, where she’ll experience speeds of up to 80mph on Europe’s highest and fastest zip line.

Amanda will travel to Zambia with fellow Minster Law colleagues Stuart Hanley and Jamie Lyons as well as 17 other BGL Group employees in June. The new £160,000 medical centre, which is being funded by BGL, will include an outpatient clinic, HIV testing and pharmacy as well as a maternity unit. The facility will be built by charity partner, Build It International.

Since finding out about their successful applications, Amanda, Stuart and Jamie have been tirelessly fundraising to amass at least £2,000 each which will go towards the construction of the clinic. To date, Amanda has raised over £3,500 towards the cause, smashing through the original target.

Speaking ahead of her Snowdonia challenge, Amanda said: “This is as much a personal challenge as it is for me to help raise funds towards building the new medical centre. I am not a big fan of heights but I’m ready to face my own fears knowing that I am doing it for such a worthy cause”.

“We are incredibly lucky in the UK to have fantastic healthcare services, and often take them for granted. There isn’t the same luxury in Zambia.  My mother was recently very ill and without local healthcare, she wouldn’t be with us today. I know my fundraising will change the lives of the entire Kapiri community and that is something I really want to be a part of.”
