Being proud to work in the personal injury sector: Fighting off the stigma

Ebony Tate

Prior to studying law at college, I got the general sense that personal injury claims received a bad reputation, mostly due to how they were portrayed on television or from the stories of exaggerated or staged claims.

Ever since choosing personal injury as a topic to study as part of my law A Level, I knew it was an area I wanted to work in. I knew I would gain a great sense of fulfilment in helping to rehabilitate people and support them in achieving justice following life-changing injuries.

A large part of my job satisfaction comes from helping people who have hit rock bottom and are unable to see a way out. I have a privileged role where I get to guide and support clients through one of the most challenging times in their lives and it is extremely rewarding to watch them finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Working in this sector is a source of pride for me for several reasons. To name a few, I am proud for the following reasons:

  1. Helping those in need: As personal injury lawyers, we have the opportunity to assist individuals who have experienced physical or emotional harm due to the negligence or wrongdoing of others. By working in this sector, we make a positive impact on people’s lives by helping them seek justice, obtain fair compensation, and regain their sense of security. By far my favourite aspect of my job is playing a role in improving the quality of our clients’ lives. I particularly enjoy working alongside case managers to support the provision of aids and equipment. A case that sticks in my mind was a young motorcyclist with a brachial plexus injury who, through excellent case management support and communication with the defendant solicitors, was provided with a MyoPro (a powered arm and hand prosthesis) designed to help restore function. It was a really special moment to hear that this client later had a baby and was able to lift and hold them, where previously he may not have been able to.
  2. Advocating for fairness and equality: Our cases often involve fighting against powerful entities and corporations. Being part of a team that stands up for the rights of the injured is incredibly empowering. By representing victims and pursuing their claims, we contribute to a more just and equal society.
  3. Making a difference in communities: The cases we deal with can have a broader impact beyond individual clients. Successful cases can lead to changes in safety regulations, improved policies, or increased awareness about potential hazards. Working in this sector allows you to contribute to safer communities and prevent future accidents or injuries.
  4. Continuous learning and professional growth: The personal injury sector is diverse and dynamic and always changing. We are constantly learning and staying updated with changes in laws, regulations, and legal precedents. Being proud to work in this industry often involves a genuine passion for learning and growing as a professional.
  5. Building strong relationships with clients: Our cases often involve navigating emotionally challenging situations. By providing support, guidance, and legal expertise, we establish meaningful relationships with our clients. Making a positive difference in someone’s life during a difficult time is immensely fulfilling and a great source of pride and personally my favourite aspect of the role.
  6. Challenging and intellectually stimulating work: Catastrophic injury cases can be complex, requiring critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning. This sector often demands creativity in finding legal solutions and negotiating settlements. As lawyers, we enjoy intellectual challenges and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Ultimately, feeling proud to work in the personal injury sector stems from the opportunity to make a difference, advocate for justice, and provide support to those who need it most, when they need it most.
